Gracanica Convent has been a Christian enclave within the largely Moslem province of Kosovo since the fourteenth century. Following the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, the convent also became a political enclave; a remnant of Serbian rule, protected by NATO troops from destruction at the hands of triumphant Kosovans.
“Narrow is the Gate” does not, however, analyse the politics of post-war Kosovo. The film follows the gate-keeper of the convent, an old nun Teodora who has no concept of “political correctness” at all. She says what more diplomatic and educated Kosovo Serbs would never openly say; yet she speaks with a degree of self-criticism that most fellow-Serbs would also find hard to admit to.
