Estonia Supports Training of Ukrainian Criminal Militia Officials
01.11.2008
The Foreign Ministry is supporting the training of the Ministry of Internal Affairs criminal militia in Ukraine’s Chernihiv oblast with 566,100 kroons (36,170 EUR).
Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that Estonia has a good opportunity to use its own experiences to help implement reforms in Ukraine’s legal system. “The reforming of Estonia’s law and order system into European law and order organisations was an experience from which we gained much wisdom, which we will gladly share with our Ukrainian colleagues,” said Foreign Minister Paet.
The Ukrainian criminal militia officials will be introduced to the universally recognised principles of Estonia’s criminal police in order to increase the professional skills and knowledge of the criminal militia. Training and practical exercises will be organised for the criminal militia workers within the framework of the project, and equipment necessary for forensic studies will be obtained.
The most important topics that will be focused on in the project are improving the providing of services, improving the quality of training and preparation of the personnel, using contemporary leadership methods, and creating greater transparency.
The project will be carried out by the Southern Police Prefecture in co-operation with the Ukrainian non-profit social organisation Dobrotšin. The project is being financed from the Foreign Ministry’s budget for development and humanitarian aid.
The Estonian Foreign Ministry’s budget for development and humanitarian aid in 2008 is 60 million kroons.
