Foreign Minister’s Comment on Results of Ireland’s Referendum

13.06.2008

Upon hearing the results of Ireland’s referendum, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet emphasised that “this is the decision made by the Irish, which must be respected.” Paet stated that it is regrettable that the Irish rejected the treaty.

He emphasised that the foreign ministers would discuss further steps on Monday at the foreign ministers’ council, and after that the matter would be discussed by the leaders of all the member states at the Council beginning on Thursday.

Paet added, “The rejection of the treaty in Ireland will certainly not stop the European Union from functioning. However, the reasons that made the Treaty of Lisbon necessary have not disappeared; in other words, the issues that would have been resolved by the Treaty of Lisbon still require solutions, so we must begin to search for new answers.”
