Estonia and UK extended Memorandum of Understanding on Afghanistan
11.03.2008
The Active Permanent Undersecretary of Estonian Ministry of Defence, Lauri Almann, and the Permanent Secretary of the British Ministry of Defence Bill Jeffrey today extended the Memorandum of Understanding, providing for Estonia’s participation under the leadership of the British operative group in Afghanistan.

Compared to the Memorandum signed two years ago, the current version includes amendments which are more formal than substantial. Nevertheless, the Memorandum is to simplify the conclusion of technical agreements between the armed forces of Great Britain and Estonia, simplifying the provision of logistical support to the Estonian Defence Forces, common training with the British troops, and medical assistance in the area of the mission.
“The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding demonstrates that our allies view us as partners who should be taken seriously and considered with regard to Afghanistan,” said the Active Permanent Undersecretary of the Estonian Ministry of Defence, Mr. Almann.
The permanent undersecretaries of the two countries also solved a number of technical issues related to sending an Estonian defence forces mortar unit to Afghanistan.
