Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall
The 24
John Potter director

A towering figure in Estonian music, Veljo Tormis's supreme achievement has been to preserve in his own music the songs of the almost forgotten peoples and languages of the clans that live in the region of Karelia, between Estonia and Finland. Tormis' powerful and accessible music embodies the heart and soul of Estonian culture and its vibrant choral tradition. The programme consists of two parts of the great Forgotten Peoples cycle – ‘Ingrian Evenings’ and ‘Karelian Destiny’, plus the Estonian Lyric Folksongs. All the music is based on folk music of the Baltic peoples, and The 24 will be singing in Estonian, Finnish and Karelian.
We are honoured that Veljo Tormis is to attend the concert, on the National Day of Estonia.
'I do not use folk music, it is folk music that uses me.' Veljo Tormis
