Estonian mezzo Kai Rüütel joined Royal Opera young artists

Young Estonian mezzo-soprano Kai Rüütel joined the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme in September 2009 and will make her Royal Opera debut as Venerable Lady The Gambler, followed by Zaïde Il turco in Italia, Rosette Manon and Flora La traviata. During Meet the Young Artists Week in the Linbury, she will sing Schumann Frauenliebe und Leben in a staged production.

Kai Rüütel trained at Georg Ots Music School in Tallinn and Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag and received a Master’s degree with special honours from the Dutch National Opera Academy. She won first prize in the national competition for young classical singers in Estonia in 2001, 2002 and 2003. She has participated in masterclasses with Graciela Araya, Mark Tucker and Paula Chateauneuf, Ryland Davies, Muriel Corradini, Patricia MacMahon, Kenneth Montgomery, Carolyn Watkinson and Meinard Kraak. She currently studies with Jon Thorsteinsson.
