Holst Singers
Stephen Layton Conductor
Parry’s Songs of Farewell, Stanford’s Three Latin Motets and music by Sir John Tavener form the musical bridge between the UK and Estonia. Pieces by American composers Morten Lauridsen and Eric Whitacre complete an atmospheric programme.
Following the release of their acclaimed recording of the music of Veljo Tormis in April 2008, the Holst Singers have been invited to perform in his native Estonia. Estonia has one of the most vibrant singing cultures in the world: both Veljo Tormis and fellow Estonian composer Arvo Pärt are hugely popular and highly regarded.
This concert previews the tour repertoire.
“Layton and his superlative choir deliver an inspiring programme … rhythmic underlay, biting harmonies,
melodies seemingly smoothed by time.”
Tormis CD review, The Times, April 2008
