Vox Clamantis, Dhafer Youssef (vocalist, oud)

The Gregorian singing of the ensemble Vox Clamantis and the performances of the Tunisian vocalist and oud-virtuoso Dhafer Youssef may seem worlds apart. So their first joint tour is bound to offer remarkable concerts. The project is nominated for the Arts Council England Realise Live award in 2007.
Dhafer Youssef has worked with top musicians such as Omar Sosa, Renaud Garcia-Fons, Nils Petter Molvaer and Markus Stockhausen. Inspired by Islamic tradition and particularly by Sufi music, Youssef adds digital sounds and blends traditional Arabic material with influences from other musical cultures. The musical press has been generous in its praise. In addition to concerts in most European countries, Youssef has appeared in Japan, Singapore, Korea, New Zealand and South Africa.
Subtle and vivid performances of Gregorian chants have won the Vox Clamantis acclaim in many countries. Several composers have written new works for the ensemble, including Arvo Pärt and Toivo Tulev. Among the ensemble's collaborations are regular joint concerts with the Chœur Grégorien de Paris and daring experimental programmes with jazz musicians: the percussionist Brian Melvin, saxophonist Villu Veski, and the Weekend Guitar Trio.
